My mother is a drug addict. My father was absent. I ended up as an addict myself, involved in criminal activities, gangs, etc, and sold drugs in order to make ends meet. Later on, a boyfriend got me involved in the sex industry.
I became an addict because I became friends with people that were experimenting with drugs. My drug became hash and I ended up a smoker for about 25 years. Some of my friends died and some survived along the way. I’d like people to understand that there’s no one that is an addict for no valid reason.

Growing up in a tough environment, drugs were prevalent in my community. When people were happy they took drugs and drank, and when they were sad or disappointed they took drugs and drank. I was given my first drink of Guinness at the age of five; and was drinking steadily by the age of twelve.
I came to New Life as a volunteer and the idea was to stay for ten days and then move on to India. After a few days, some of the issues I have been dealing with came up and I realised I was in the right place at the right time to work on them.
I suffered depression for many years, and later realised that I hadn’t been able to grieve the end of my 1st marriage in 1981. Eventually I decided I couldn’t go on like that any longer… I have been sober now for 18 years, and still take one day at a time.
I came to New Life to find some direction in my life. My favorite part was learning about the enneagram and understanding my personality type better, what makes me tick and my traits. I had never heard about the enneagram before, just the Meyers Briggs system. The enneagram went into more detail about childhood behavior and gave more insight into a career path.
