It’s always a good day when you meet people who inspire you, and who are open, happy, and caring, as this always rubs off on those around. Two such people who came to volunteer at the New Life Foundation were Laura and John. Their approach and outlook on life immediately made them a big hit at New Life.
Laura launched knitting classes, which became a big success, while John started looking for jobs to do in his spare time. His first was to repair the foundation bikes, no small task! Their main volunteer job was to work on the earthen building project, which they did with enthusiasm and a sense of fun, quickly becoming key people within the work group.
During their time at New Life, John and Laura became inspired by the nature of New Lifes’ approach to recovery, and how it helps people to reach a better clarity in their life. They decided that they could funnel this inspiration into practical use, by helping to raise funds for the foundation.
John and Laura have been traveling for some time, and the final leg of their travels is to cycle from Istanbul to Amsterdam. On this part of the trip, they aim to raise funds from sponsorship, the funds of which will be donated to New Life. In fact they have already inspired people to donate, and have so far raised 8,500 Thai Baht before their trip has even started!
John and Laura tell their story from here…
“Dear Friends & Family,
The end of our amazing 16 month trip is in sight & the time has come for our homeward journey, but not without some fun & adventure! From June until September we will be cycling 3000km from Istanbul to Amsterdam (from where we’ll take a ferry back to Newcastle), raising money for the New Life Foundation near Chiang Rai, Thailand. The foundation is an international recovery community that supports people who are overcoming addictions, depression and stress. Insight, mindfulness and meditation are used rather than medication to help the recovery process.
We recently spent a month volunteering at the foundation and had such a special time – we were very moved by the residents stories of how they’d come upon such difficulties and how New Life was helping them on their path to recovery. The community is a very special place for both residents and volunteers and we’d love to support it as much as possible by raising funds for them over the summer. To find out more about New Life you can read our blog posts about it here or check out their website: www.newlifethaifoundation.com
Our journey will take us through Western Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Hungary, along the Danube through Slovakia and Austria, up through the Czech Republic into Germany and west through Holland to Amsterdam. We will be keeping regular updates on our blog www.meyouandrootoo.blogspot.com and will be catching up with some friends and family along the way.
If you would like to support our journey and those at New Life, you can do so by visiting our fundraising page http://www.simplygiving.com/istanbultoamsterdam . Our fundraising target is £1000 (50,000 Thai Baht). Please note, donations are made in Thai Baht (roughly £1 = 50 Baht). You can also help us to promote New Life by passing it’s details onto anyone you think might benefit from the recovery process.
Thank you so much!
Laura & John xxx“
