Man In The Mirror

Mitchell’s Inspirational Farewell Speech…

Mitchell, resident‘During our trek over the weekend I had some time to think about what to say right now.

So here we go…

New Life forms a core chapter in the rediscovery of my life. The amazing people and this place in general rocks! You know I really had a solid and yearlong education from school, parents and society in general. It will take me years to get over it!

I’m now at a point in my life where I’m seriously considering how I’ve been conditioned, programmed and wired. Right now it’s about learning and unlearning, reviewing myself and polishing the glasses through which I see the world. In school I learned how to make a living, now I’m learning how to live and how to love.

At New Life I found some wonderful tools for living a life full of happiness but, and this is a big but, learning these tools is not enough – however full my toolbox becomes it will not be of any value if I simply store this toolbox in the shed. It’s about applying and experimenting with these tools in real life, all day and every day. No-one can do this for me. I need to put in the blood, sweat and tears to make that change into a happier and more fulfilling life.

At the foundation of this reinvention of myself, there lays a core principle that took me years to accept and understand. It was under my nose the whole time but I just didn’t see it. I was too blind and too stubborn to see it. It’s simple and yet so profound and powerful. Gandhi used the words: “Be the change you want to see in the world”. A slight variation of the serenity prayer points me in the same direction. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage the change the ones I can, and the wisdom to know that is me.”

For me, this is about ownership, ownership of my own life in order to change my life, and the world, for the better. The king of pop, Michael Jackson, put this so beautifully, you probably know what I’m talking about, so please sing along if it sounds familiar…

“I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I’m asking you to change his ways. No message couldn’t have been any clearer, If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make that change.”

Thank you’.

  1. Thanks for sharing these thoughts. I’ve been in a similar place for the past few months. I wish I could make the journey and take a time out for the same transformation that you are going through, but I get to experience it in real time for now 😉

Anyway, I wish you the best! Enjoy your journey.

  2. Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. I hope to visit New Life myself some day. Wishing you love and light on your journey xxx

  3. Mitchell was a lovely presence to have here and many people at the foundation were touched by him – what a great guy!
