At New Life Foundation, we encourage residents and volunteers to share special skills with the community. Ronald, from The Netherlands, has been giving us training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).
Daily, he guides us through both walking and sitting meditations, helping us focus on the here and now, without judgment and with acceptance and compassion.
Developed by American Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, MBSR brings together mindfulness meditation and yoga–two of our daily practices at New Life. It has evolved into a common form of complementary medicine addressing a variety of health problems.
Ronald was first introduced to meditation in 1997 when he had a near-mystic experience at a Christian monastery not far from his Dutch home. He went there every day for three months to meditate with the monks.
Soon after, Ronald decided to train as a Jungian therapist. He also started a personal yoga practice. But a few years later, he hit the wall with extreme burnout. At this point, he made a commitment to work on himself through yoga and meditation, to become his own therapist in a sense. Before he could start the training, he was required to meditate every day for two years. For almost seven years now, he has continued daily meditation.
Today, Ronald is a social worker and has a private therapy practice in The Netherlands. He has taught MBSR to social workers, helping them become more empathetic, increasing their enjoyment of work and preventing burnout.
Ronald says MBSR can help an addict’s recovery by reducing stress, encouraging recognition of old patterns of behavior, transforming cravings by understanding the underlying feelings that cause them, and alleviating depression. Most importantly, MSBR can help us all enjoy life more even when we’re suffering.
